Local Man Faces Multiple Counts Of TennCare Fraud
A local man indicted on numerous counts of TennCare fraud was taken into police custody Tuesday and incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center. The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) reported Tuesday that Michael M. Kelley, age 60, was arrested on twenty-one counts of TennCare fraud.
According to a press release issued through OIG, Kelley’s arrest was the result of an investigation into alleged “doctor shopping”. Kelley reportedly went to multiple healthcare providers in a short period of time to obtain controlled medications, using TennCare as payment.
A Class E felony, TennCare fraud is punishable by imprisonment of up to two years per charge. If convicted, Kelley faces up to forty-two years in prison.
Through the OIG Cash for Tips Program established by the Legislature, Tennesseans can get cash rewards for TennCare fraud tips that lead to convictions. Anyone can report suspected TennCare fraud by calling 1-800-433-3982 toll-free from anywhere in Tennessee, or log on to www.tn.gov/tnoig/ and follow the prompts that read "Report TennCare Fraud."
